Review | Sister Act | Storyhouse Chester | 24/06/2024

With a never ending list of 90s films being adapted for the stage, the quality of them can differ drastically. Fortunately Sister Act is the gold standard in musical adaptations. Fifteen years since its West End premiere, and two years into its third UK tour, Sister Act has come to Chester Storyhouse.

Although staying somewhat faithful to the 1992 film, the musical manages to carve out its own narrative. We follow Disco Diva, Deloris Van Cartier (Landi Oshinowo), as she navigates being in a convent under the witness protection programme. Oshinowo is sublime as Deloris, with her powerhouse vocals stealing the show. Whilst not playing the role specifically like any of the previous leads, she has the natural warmth and attitude which Whoopi Goldberg displayed in the original film.

Whilst the whole cast were fantastic, Isabel Canning in particular commanded the audiences attention with her hilarious portrayal of Sister Mary Patrick with each and every look and movement. Coronation Street royalty Wendi Peters swapped the cobbles for the convent as Mother Superior, and superior she was! Peters and Oshinowo were the perfect double act, bringing humour through their challenging friendship.

Whilst it doesn’t have the songs from the original film, this musical has something even better, the composing talent of Alan Menkin. Menkin is the mastermind behind some of the most beloved Disney soundtracks from The Little Mermaid to Aladdin. Having also composed the music for Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act is in safe hands with Menkin behind the music. From opening number ‘Take Me To Heaven’ the audience know they are in store for, with other highlights being ‘Raise Your Voice’, ‘The Life I Never Led’ and the joyous closing number ‘Spread The Love Around’. You will find yourself dancing in your seat, it is impossible not to have a fabulous (baby) time at Sister Act The Musical!

With shimmering costume reveals and fantastic staging, alongside the uplifting story people know and love, this show guarantees an unforgettable night out at the theatre. Sister Act plays at Storyhouse until Saturday 29 June 2024.
